Mạc Đĩnh Chi was a poor boy from a small village in Việt Nam during the Trần Dynasty. When he was studying in his hometown, he could not afford an oil lamp to read books at night. Therefore, he put fireflies into eggshells and used their light to read the pages. With great dedication, he became a leading scholar in the village and later passed the palace examination as the highest-scoring graduate in 1304.

Mạc Đĩnh Chi là một chàng trai nghèo ở một làng quê nhỏ ở Việt Nam vào thời Trần. Hồi còn học ở quê, tối về không có nổi đèn dầu đọc sách. Vì vậy, ông đã đặt những con đom đóm vào vỏ trứng và sử dụng ánh sáng của chúng để đọc các trang sách. Với những cống hiến to lớn, ông đã trở thành một học giả có tiếng trong làng và sau đó đã vượt qua kỳ thi của hoàng cung với tư cách là người tốt nghiệp có điểm số cao nhất vào năm 1304.
